When the World Needs Us

Colleges are on the front lines of the intersections of technological innovation, workplace expectations and societal change with responsibility for preparing future generations of leaders and engaged citizens. At this time, institutions of higher education around the world face great headwinds. Social unrest, drops in college attendance rates, volatile financial markets, pressures on disposable family income, political polarization, economic challenges, aging technology and infrastructure, challenging international relations and so much more consume planning at macro and micro levels in all industries around the globe.

As some global citizens debate the efficacy of how to address so many of the world’s needs with limited resources, and as others question the value of varying levels of post-secondary education, we, at Central College, know how to do the world, a world of good.

Central leaders and members of the Central family do not wait. They step forward from positions of strength to be out in front of the world with what’s next. Every year, Central graduates become CEOs, pastors, teachers, administrators, doctors, small business owners and answer the call of civic, professional, mentorship, coaching and leadership duties. Our rich inheritance at Central did not come through luck. It came from our community – generations of giving back, coming back, participating and doing good.

We believe our work is seen best through the lens of our core value of empathy. People always come first, and our values are expressed clearly in our Welcome Statement. Everything we do is intended to help our students develop this important capacity and it’s how we interact with the world. A compassionate, empathetic heart starts with an open mind, which allows us to see the world through another’s eyes. It allows us to see ourselves in others and binds us together in a fair, productive and caring community.

The Central family radiates support. This backing opens doors, minds and lifetimes of possibilities for not only our students and graduates but also the communities in which we all live and thrive. And, once you’re in the Central family, you’re with us for life, doing a world of good near and far! That’s what it means to be Forever Dutch®!

175 Years! Let’s Celebrate!

As we approach the 175th anniversary of our great institution in 2028, we have a responsibility to celebrate our past and press forward with the innovation, creativity and boldness for the future that has been painted across the beautifully written tapestry of Central’s history. We must remain resilient and relevant. This work brings a sense of energy, enthusiasm and optimism!

Since its founding in 1853, Central’s grit and determination in defining moments inspire. The college beat many odds, transformed lives and communities and steadfastly remained committed to doing a world of good.

In wartime, when our country was in need, Central sent all. With just 50 students remaining on campus, the college stepped forward with a new aviation program to support its country’s efforts. Central delivered.

When fires gutted our campus, Central rebuilt.

When the depression era took its toll on families and students couldn’t pay their bills, the college launched Central Industries to provide work and paychecks to students, who in turn, paid faculty salaries. Central innovated.

When the world thirsted for learning abroad, hearts for service, research across disciplines, meaningful internships and community partners, Central provided and connected.

And, when central Iowa and Pella surfaced workforce issues — especially around engineering — Central answered with a bachelor of science degree in engineering, accredited by ABET.

In 2019, as its peers crossed the $50-60K mark and more, Central boldly abandoned the pricing model used by most institutions of higher education. The high price, high discount model didn’t align with our values of transparency and being a good citizen of the world. Central rolled out an affordable tuition price of $19,600 with commitments — like graduation in four years and a guaranteed internship — which launched a tremendous amount of momentum for a campus that is no stranger to doing what is right.

Planning for the next 175 years takes courage. Not only does Central have a responsibility to the community in which we live, we think the world is ready to join us in some important work. It will take both our long-time and loyal Central family members and new partners ready to propel us forward for the good of all.

Help us animate the future for Central, nurture a love for learning, serve community, lift corporate partners and prepare engaged citizens.
